The Poker River Card

Posted by admin | July 28, 2008 | Posted in: Articles | Comments Off

If you play a lot of poker but you are unfamiliar with some of its terms this article is about the river card. In poker the river card is the last communal card to be dealt out by the dealer. This card can often make or break a players hand so players with good high pocket cards often like to hold on to their cards until this card is dealt out. Many a game has been won on the river card by the player holding a hand that is entirely dependent upon the final card. In poker terms when this happens the unfortunate loosing player is said to have “drowned in the river”.

When playing Texas Hold’em or Omaha the river card is also known by the name Fifth Street as it is the fifth card turned over for all to see. The river card terminology is also used in seven-card, it is also the last card to be dealt out during the hand., also called seventh street the river card in seven card poker is dealt out face down.

As with ever other community card before the river card is turned over the top card on the deck is “burnt” or disposed off. After the river card is shown players have a final round of betting before the showdown occurs, at this stage of the game each player no longer has to guess at the hand possibilities as all the cards are on the table. This doesn’t stop players from making a bluff however so it is wise to try and learn as much as you can about the other players betting habits.
