About Razz Poker
Razz poker is a form of stud poker and is quite similar to the seven card stud. Most of the rules of the latter also apply in razz with a few changes. The object of this game is to make the lowest possible five card hand from the dealt seven cards. It is normally played for ace to five low. The best possible razz hand is 5-4-3-2-Ace or five high which is sometimes also called ‘the wheel’ or the ‘the bicycle’ in poker jargon.
Razz, with its popularity was included in the World Series of Poker games in 1973 and generally is played as a limit poker game. In Razz, everyone is supposed to put in their ante before the cards are dealt. Each player is dealt two cards face down and one face up called the door card. The gambler with the highest door card has to start the bet which is generally one third to one half of the regular bet. If two players have the same door card, then the suit determines the first better.
As in normal stud poker, play continues clockwise from first bet. When the first round of betting is done, then each player gets another card face up. This time the player with the lowest card starts the betting. The play continues like this till the fifth card is dealt when the bets double. The seventh card is finally dealt face down and the player who opened in the 6th round opens this also. At the end, the one with the best five card combination or the lowest card combination wins. For example, an eight low will beat a nine low and so on.
Over the years, Razz has been adopted by many players though still it remains the underdog of poker games. But many razz strategies have been formulated to play it better. Many say that razz is a game of patience and has to be played calmly. In razz, it is very important to observe all the cards that are being opened. These cards can give the player a fair idea of the relative strength of his hand.
In razz, the dealer announces once a player gets a pair except for if it is a pair of face cards. It is absolutely important to keep observing the other player’s pairs as this will increase the chances of you not getting a pair. For example: If A has 2-3-5 and B gets 4-2-2, then A has a higher chance of not getting another 2 soon enough thereby eliminating the probability of a 2 coming in his hand.
Razz is a game of patience but that doesn’t make it a slow game. When you know that you have winning hands, you can’t be slow, you have to jam them. And you also need to know when to fold in this game. So generally speaking, there are many strategies in Razz and practise is what can make a fine player at this interesting variant of poker.
