Unlike what many people think, it is not a game based on only luck, the players have to think and strategize carefully. In order to know how this variation of poker came about we have to first know the interesting history behind the origin of poker itself. The origin of poker is said to date back to the first half of the 19th century. It was in the gambling and floating saloons by river Mississippi in New Orleans that poker was first played. Soon the game began to attract more and more people. During the initial days poker was played with a deck of 20 cards which consisted of aces, kings, queen, jacks and the tens cards and the players would bet on which hand would be the most valuable one. In his book ‘An Exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling’, Jonathan Green first called the game ‘Poker’. Over the period of time, in order to add excitement and variations to the game different versions of the game began to appear like the famous Texas Holdem, 5 Card Draw, Omaha poker and Pai Gow poker amongst other variations. Omaha poker is a popular version of poker and can be seen in almost all the casinos and poker tournaments. After Texas Holdem, which is the number one poker variation attracting players, Omaha poker is the second most popular version. Omaha poker is similar to Texas Holdem in many ways which is a major reason behind its popularity. Soon variations in Omaha Poker also came about giving rise to the Omaha poker Hi Lo. It is also known by other names like ‘Omaha Poker High Low Split’ or ‘8 or Better’. In this variation of Omaha Poker the pot is split between the highest hand and the lowest hand, so while some players aim for getting the best highest hand combination, others try to get the lowest hand possible. If no player gets the qualifying low hand then the entire pot goes to the player with the highest hand. In the present days this action filled card game is attracting more people, especially those who want to learn about different kinds of card games. |
