Easy Guide to playing Omaha poker Hi Lo

Also known as Omaha 8 or better or Omaha 8/B or Omaha Split, Omaha Hi Lo is one of the most popular forms of poker. It is found in almost all the land based casinos and online casinos and plays an important role in most of the poker tournaments. Many people are afraid to try the game out because it looks complicated. But in reality it is a simple game which it easy to learn, it just requires a lot of practice.

In this variation of poker the players are dealt four cards after which rounds of betting takes place. This alternating process of dealing the cards and betting goes on. After the 3 card flop is dealt and wagers are made, a turn card is dealt to the players. And after another round of betting the final ‘river’ card is dealt. In many ways this game is similar to Texas Holdem and those who know Texas Holdem can adapt to the game easily.

In Omaha Hi Lo the players have to carefully choose two cards from the four hole cards in their hand. They also have to choose three community cards on the board. They have to combine of these five cards to come up with the best possible five card hand.

In Omaha poker there are two types of best hands – the highest hand and the lowest hand. So in a single game of Omaha Hi Lo there can be two winners – one who is having the highest hand and the player who has the lowest qualifying hand or the low hand. The pot is split between the two winners. Incase there are no players with a qualifying low hand then the player with the highest hand will win the whole pot. In order to qualify for a low hand none of the cards should be more than 8.

In Omaha poker Hi Lo a ‘nut low’ takes place when the board has three low cards and a player has the other two lowest cards that are not there on the board. This means that player has the ‘nut low’. Omaha poker is the perfect game for serious gamblers. Unlike other games bluffing is not an important part of Omaha poker, neither will reading the faces of the other players give you any extra edge. You have to concentrate solely on your hand.

Omaha poker Hi Lo is an exciting and delightful game which is full of action. So if you haven’t played it already, it’s high time you give it a try.
