7 card stud poker: How it started

7 card stud poker had almost similar origins as the 5 card version. Poker as a game was introduced to the United States by the Persian sailors whose ships moored at New Orleans. Given the popularity of riverboat gambling in Mississippi, it was no wonder that the game caught fire quickly and soon became one of the most popular gambling card games.

The game of poker dates back to Persia where it was called Nas. The game of the game comes from Pochen in German that became Poque in French. The modern game of 7 card stud poker has a lot of similarities to both Nas and Poque. Some of the rules of the game are combinations of rules of Nas and Poque.

Initially, poker was played with 20 cards and only four players could play the game at one time. The rules of the game were simple. There was no concept of drawing as all the cards were equally distributed among the players. With the popularity of the game on the rise the number of cards was increased to 52 so that more players could participate. New rules came into being as professional gamblers started playing this game. The English game of brag added the concept of bluffing to the game. Wildcard was also introduced.

During the American Civil War different variations of the original game of poker came into being, stud poker being one of them. The original inventors of the stud games, 5 and 7 card, are supposed to be the studs or cowboys of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. The 7 card stud poker was introduced to the world of poker in the early 20th century. It started on a high note of popularity and continued to remain the most popular poker game till the late 20th century.

7 card stud poker remained the most popular casino card game till as late as the 1980s. It was at this time that Texas Hold ’Em poker was introduced to the casinos and it went on to become the most popular casino card game and still remains so. However, if you look at the poker tournaments around the world, the World Series of Poker for instance, you will find that almost all the games have some elements of 7 card stud poker in them. Clubs and parties around the world still have players who swear by the name of 7 card stud poker.
