How to Play 7 Card Stud Poker

At initial glance, 7 card stud poker looks very simple to play but those that excel at this game say that it takes their entire life to master. There is no end to the learning that is associated with this game and this is what that makes it so special.

Typically, there is a limit betting structure in 7 card stud poker where the bets increase in a fixed manner. For example, if the limit is $1/$2 then the bets increase by a dollar in the first two rounds and by $2 in the next three rounds.

The game starts with an ante where all the players place an agreed nominal amount. The ante amount differs from game to game. The game starts with the Third Street where every player is dealt three cards, one face up and two hidden. The player with the lowest open card starts the betting. This player can either make a nominal bet as decided by the rules of the table or increase their bet by the fixed amount. The subsequent players keep betting clockwise until one round is complete. The players now move to the Fourth Street.

The Fourth Street sees a fourth open card being dealt. The player with the highest poker value cards starts the betting in this round. Again the betting amount is nominal as decided by the rules of the table or it can be increased by the fixed amount. The other players now place their bets and complete the round.

The Fifth Street sees another round of single open cards being dealt and the player to start the betting is the one who has the highest poker value cards and the other players follow suit. The same action continues in the Sixth Street where another open card is dealt.

The Seventh Street, also called The River, is where all the players receive a single hidden card and only they know the value of their card. The player with the highest poker value of exposed cards starts the betting and the others follow. If there are more than one player remaining at the end of this round’s betting, the Showdown is started.

The showdown involves displaying one’s hands. The player with the best hand takes home the pot.
