How to Play 5 Card Stud Poker

If you are aware of the rules of poker then playing 5 card stud poker is no big deal at all. The basic rules remain the same with some changes here and there. If you even observe a few games being played you will immediately get to know what needs to be done. As with the game of poker, luck plays a role in this game too. Of course, your skill at bluffing helps you win.

Before you start your game of 5 card stud poker you must familiarize yourself with the card values. The value of the cards is in increasing order from 2 to Ace. The Ace can also be used as the lowest value card. You also need to familiarize yourself with the terms deal, ante, bankroll, buy-in and betting limits.

The game begins with the Open where each player is dealt two cards, the first being the hidden card and the second being the open card. The hidden card is face down while the open card is face up. There are some variations to this rule but traditionally this is the format that is followed.

Once the two cards are dealt players now need to place their bets. It does not matter whether you have a low or a high card opening. The game continues in the same manner irrespective of low or high open card. When the first round of betting is completed the play moves to the Third Street.

In Third Street, a third open card is dealt to all the players. Low limit bets happen at this time and the betting moves to the Fourth Street. The Fourth Street also involves dealing another open card to all the players and the betting is high limit here. The final card, also an open card is part of the Fifth and final street. High limit bets are placed in the Fifth Street. The player with the best cards takes to rake in all the betted money.

Some variations of the game include dealing both hidden cards during the open and a single hidden card during the Fifth Street.

5 card stud poker is not one of the most popular casino games at the moment but it is very popular in social gatherings. It is easy to play and if you are lucky you may take home a considerable amount. Learn the game before you play and you will do well.
