5 card stud poker: How it started

The game of poker goes back a long way and it is said that the game originated in Persia. Some historians are of the opinion that the game of poker came to the United States the way of New Orleans through the Persian sailors. As for the name of the game, the German name “Pochen” seems to be the origin. Pochen became “Poque” in French and finally poker in English. The earliest poker games were similar to the game of 5 card stud poker.

It was around the early 19th century that New Orleans became the home of poker in the United States. Typically, the game was played with 20 cards that were evenly dealt among the four participating players. No draw was possible and bets were made on a narrow combination range. The betting was simple and the combinations were even simpler. Since Mississippi was a popular place for riverboat gambling, the game spread like wildfire in the area.

Gradually, the 20 card deck gave way to the modern 52 card deck. This allowed more players to participate in one game. New innovations were introduced in the game. For example, the concept of flush came into being at a later stage. It was during the American Civil War that different variants of the game were introduced and 5 card stud poker was one of them. The original game of 5 card stud poker was very similar to the game that is played today. All the five cards were dealt face down and drawing was not allowed. There was only one round of betting allowed.

It was during the mid 19th century that professional gamblers started putting in more variations to the game of 5 card stud poker. Rules were changed in order to make the game more interesting. Drawing was now allowed and the usage of bluffing and wild cards were introduced. Once these rules and changes were introduced they continued to be part of the game and are still so at present.

At present, 5 card stud poker is less popular than some of the other poker variations. But it continues to be one of the most popular poker games around. While it is absent from the World Series of Poker it is still played with great enthusiasm. If you happen to visit parties and clubs you will find many players playing the game of 5 card stud poker.
